This author really seems to have an axe to grind with China: https://www.theatlantic.com/author/michael-schuman/

I wonder if he fully realizes how America is abusing it's position vis-a-vis AI? It's hard to throw stones at China from the relative glass houses of Palantir and NRO SENTIENT.

China/CCP spends over 14 billion a year to change the narrative. Plenty of folks online that talk about it. There is a constant onslaught of misinformation and millions in the 50 Cent Army working day and night.

At the moment there is an all out online information war between India and China that most folks especially in the West have no clue about. I often tell people that if they think China is such a great place and believe everything they hear, go and experience it. Tell us how it goes, after you're robbed blind, harassed, fed god only knows what, and possibly killed by a street gang at night.

Misinformation is the status-quo. The CCP is a peer power to America, and they're matching the same propaganda outlets like Hollywood and social media with their own forms. It's a credibly modern response to tactics used by nations like America and Israel to influence public opinion. Seems like you agree that it's an effective strategy.

My point moreover is that this guy is hand-wringing about things that have been normalized under capitalist influence for decades. It's only unfair to him when America's adversaries copy their tactics, because he'd never hold America up to the same measure. It's an obvious double-standard that undermines his attempt to highlight a phenomenon.
